BENEFITS OF AN M-LOK RAIL
Historically,
the requirement to attach accessories to a weapons platform started in the
1970s and grew into the Special Operations Peculiar Modification (SOPMOD)
program finalized in the early 1990s. Built specifically around the M4 carbine
and the Rail Interface System (RIS), the SOPMOD program gave root to accessory
attachment capabilities to rifles and other carbines. The idea was to give
operators the ability to attach various equipment to a wider selection of
weapon systems depending on the mission.
Today,
almost every AR-15 or AR-10 styled rifle or carbine is either factory-equipped
or can be quickly modified to accept a wide range of attachments using
Picatinny rails or the M-LOK attachment system. Let's look at seven advantages
of the M-LOK Rail technology.
A Wide Range of Accessory Options:
Every
year, more products are introduced to the market, the options for firearm
accessories are practically unlimited. Accessory manufacturers are beginning to
choose the M-LOK system because of its weight savings, versatility, and cost
advantages. Let's discuss a few of the M-LOK accessories that are currently
available.
·
Optics - Red dot

·
Aiming devices that
use visible and infrared (IR) lasers

·
Rail panels provide
heat mitigation and offhand stability.
·

target pointing, and clip-on style lenses are all night vision features.
·
Iron Sights can be
used as a primary or backup sighting system.
·

Secure Attachments:
Unlike
the Picatinny rail system, the M-LOK system attaches accessories via a slot
rather than an outward-facing rail. To establish a good and secure attachment,
and M-LOK mount employs two or more internal levers that are put into the slot
and tightened with a hex wrench. The internal lever holds the mounting system
by sandwiching the mount between the M-LOK slots. M-LOK mounts and devices are
removed by removing the hex screws a quarter turn and sliding the lever out of the
slot.
Savings on weight:
Adding
equipment to the front end of a rifle or carbine adds weight by definition. If
you give greater weight to the weapon system, and the further it is from the
shooter, the more force is necessary to maintain it lifted on a target. The
opposite is true: a lighter forend or handguard requires less effort to keep
the rifle in place. M-LOK systems are generally lighter than Picatinny systems
because they do not require the added heft of external rails.
Why
M-LOK Rail Covers?
M-LOK Rail Covers are low-profile
two-piece covers that fit over M-LOK compatible systems. These covers' contact
surfaces are textured with the Magpul TSP texture for added grip, adding little
more than 1/8-inch to the mounting surface. They also have a beveled contour to
prevent snagging. Because these M-LOK Covers are non-orientation specific,
mounted those in any direction without compromising functionality.
